In the first TED Talk by Pat Ferrucci "Sports journalists stereotype athletes by race - and we do too", Ferrucci explains the way that Sports journalists write news and stories about the race and words that journalists use to describe an athlete's play. Ferrucci noted that if you look at a white athlete he will be called smart and intelligent, a black athlete will be talked about in their physical strength and toughness, mexicans might be called fiery and Asians are called intelligent.
Ferrucci claims that normal people will stereotype athletes based on these journalists who already do so. I can agree with Ferrucci on some aspects of his statements, but personally ive never noticed races being stereotyped because I see some of the statements he's making in his ted talk factual. I wouldn't already look at Cam Newton as a intelligent athlete because the overwhelming factor when you look at Cam Newton is obviously how strong and big he is, he's a type of player to throw his weight around as a quarterback, and why would I describe Tom Brady in his strength when he physically does not look like Cam Newton. I feel as though this topic on journalist stereotypes is taken a much out of context and made to be more racial than it actually is. Besides describing latino athletes as fiery, I really see it as passion and competitiveness. From a baseball background, I know many athletes who I have played with from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and thats the way I would describe them as athletes. To wrap this up, I believe that Ferrucci was thinking too much into this realm of describing sports athletes. Even though his point is obvious, it doesn't mean that it's racist and wrong to describe sports athletes these ways.
